Jam Chart for Kill Devil Falls (21 entries)

Date City Timing Notes
2009-06-02 Wantagh, NY 7:05 Debut.
2009-06-12 Manchester, TN 15:18 The first "Type II" version. Led by Trey, the jam slowly drifts from the typical blues-rock into a whammy-filled, major-key groove not unlike the famous 7/10/99 "CDT" in spots. Ends with a -> to "Free."
2011-05-27 Bethel, NY 12:48 A real hybrid that combines suave major mode playing with the expected minor rock.
2011-09-03 Commerce City, CO 11:03 A smoking "Type I" version that keeps on rocking after the final lyrics and concludes with a spacey outro jam that > to "2001."
2012-06-22 Cincinnati, OH 11:21 Includes an eerie outro full of creepy effects that sounds like it was taken right out of the IT festival and transitions (>) to an equally menacing "Twist."
2012-07-08 Saratoga Springs, NY 10:44 Intense "Type I" jamming continues after the final lyrics before dipping into some darker playing that quickly brightens before ending with a -> to "MFMF."
2014-10-28 San Francisco, CA 13:22 The jam begins at a less frenetic pace than usual, before Trey's delay work and minor chording lead the jam into uncharted territory. At the 9 minute mark, the jam goes fully "Type II," and then turns ambient before > to "Mountains In The Mist."
2015-07-31 Atlanta, GA 22:37 The longest and most exploratory version to date. Strong finish via some "Tweezer Reprise"-esque jamming.
2015-12-31 New York, NY 13:38 Around 6:30, Trey leads this one into the "Type II" zone, where it remains for the duration as it drifts through some low-key psychedelia before a > to "Piper".
2018-07-28 Inglewood, CA 10:56 Flirts with major-key play early on, reverts back to minor with Trey employing an organ-like tone, and then breaks into some immensely upbeat jamming until the final chorus.
2019-06-26 Bangor, ME 11:06 Fairly intense but inbounds playing continues until 6:45 brings a shift to a warmer, more relaxed zone which gives Page and Mike space to step up before Trey brings things back to a rocking finish.
2019-12-03 Philadelphia, PA 9:16 At 5:50 the jam shifts to upbeat major play and immediately transforms into patented Phish bliss and then > into a continuation of "Tweezer". Unfinished.
2021-10-31 Las Vegas, NV 12:30 Trey's favorite delay signals this version will break the mold, and a fully-formed, feel-good jam quickly emerges. A bit of the 2021 "Sci-Fi Soldier" sound creeps in before the final lyrics and becomes more pronounced in the outro until > "Free".
2022-05-29 Orange Beach, AL 11:47 Do not let the time stamp or placement fool you. Around 6:30 in, the jam shifts to light and airy interplay with major key dominance that then turns to effects-and-synth-driven goop and grime. Eventually comes back to finish and end on the "Kill Devil Falls" theme.
2022-07-20 Philadelphia, PA 10:59 The jam shifts very subtly from the usual blues-rock to more upbeat play and then strays further from "KDF" as it progresses, eventually landing unfinished > "Theme".
2022-08-03 Clarkston, MI 14:24 Takes flight around 7:00 with anthemic bliss, later incorporating a tease of "Freeway Jam" at 9:00, then chills out a bit and remains unfinished > "Camel Walk".
2022-09-03 Commerce City, CO 15:32 In the longest version since Lakewood 2015 (since surpassed by 7/23/23), the band treats us to a buffet of '22 sounds. Coming out of the gate with a rollicking, fast-paced jam that transitions through discrete sections as Trey toys with his tone, play brightens with outstanding contributions from Mike and Page. Fishman seems to anticipate each melodic turn that Trey takes as the jam builds intensity and takes on a sharper edge. The last couple minutes serve as transitional space highlighted with washes from Page on the Moog before finally giving way to "Sigma Oasis".
2022-12-31 New York, NY 12:13 > from "2001". The upbeat song turns on a dime and becomes subdued from the jump. The tempo gradually picks back up again and then abates again. In a tight timeframe, this versatile jam goes from introspective to rocking and then back again. Trey eventually winds his way back to the song proper to close things out.
2023-04-18 Berkeley, CA 13:39 An appearance of the dial tone opens the door to exploration and the jam first makes a quick detour with Trey playing wah rhythm chords while Page comes to the forefront, but before long it morphs into a more conventional upbeat jam. This eventually peters out and something a bit more discordant and unpredictable emerges in the final minutes before > "Fuego".
2023-07-23 Syracuse, NY 18:46 Firmly in the conversation for best "KDF" to date, this version diverges quickly with a driving, upbeat jam which then becomes more textural and hard-edged after 9:00. It then reverts to major for the stretch run to a strong peak which Trey hammers home with a memorable melodic hook.
2024-02-23 Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico 11:58 > from "46 Days." The continued renaissance of jammed out versions of "KDF" gets another entry with a fun, effects-laden jaunt. Fish's play shines through as a driving force. The jam culminates in a maelstrom of sounds, before eventually > "Wading."
Jam chart versions are selected because of improvisational and other characteristics that distinguish these from typical versions of the song.
