Review by Davehengemania

Davehengemania This was my first show. My best friend had been urging me to see Phish for more than a year. I had 2nd generation tapes of the two available albums at that time, Junta and Lawn Boy. I thought they were interesting. I liked Esther the most. So, anyway... I got a call from my sisters boyfriend that Phish was playing his college and I should attend. I drove my Subaru GL up from Shrewsbury, MA. We partied a little too hard before hand and then walked the incredibly long distance (probably I could have rolled it was very close) from the dorms to the Bates gymnasium. I remember it being well attended but in those days you could walk right up to the stage and we did. It was a fairly high stage per my memory, and I was able to put my whole arms out on the stage. The band or school had giant fans on both sides of the stage, which were utilized in spite of it being winter. It was a good show, or enough to inspire me to see them again at Smith a week later. Being a big deadhead at the time I wasn’t recruited yet, but after Smith I was sold. For the 20 plus years since I have remembered them closing with Contact, so either that’s false memory or that got clipped from the tape. Anyway, this show isn’t essential listening. The playing is average to below average for 91. But still very listenable and enjoyable. I will always treasure it and I am grateful I got to see 6 shows that year. Thank you Phish!!!

Review by DemandOpener

DemandOpener This was a tough show to listen to as the only recording available was incredibly boomy and sounded like it was recorded in a giant, empty warehouse.

Positives: The setlist is good and contains new songs, old favorites, and rarities like Destiny Unbound, The Mango Song, and (at the time) Horn.

Unfortunately, that's about all I can say about this show, because the quality of the recording doesn't lend itself to recommendations. If you want a laugh, though, check out the Suzy Greenberg for some hilarious Fish noises/screaming. 2 stars for an average show with a below average tape.

thelot God bless the tapers! Beautiful audience recording for this show! Of course the acoustics of the gymnasium could be better but what can you do. Big thanks to John Redmond for getting it done once again!

They get the party started with Oh Kee Pah>Suzy. The Maine audience gets their first Guelah. DaaM>Esther makes for a nice pairing. Hopefully they’re done with the predictable DaaM>Bouncin’ combo! Pretty straightforward Stash. Cool version of Destiny with an enjoyable mid section. Tape flip after Destiny. Beginning of YEM is cut. ;) Decent jam section. Fun vocal jam with what sounds like “Old Man” quotes. A short yet appropriate Chalk Dust closes out set 1 on a high note.

The second half opens with a nice Coil. Longest Page solo up to this point. Golgi, Mango and Sloth are all well played. Antelope has a smokin’ little jam. Lawn Boy provides a nice cool down. Bathtub Gin was only played 3 times during the fall tour so it’s nice to hear it. Rippin’ Jim to close out the set! Before the encore Trey mentions that they’re gonna do a couple songs. He points out that a lot of the new songs are just one word so they’re easier to remember for everyone. lol Horn starts off the encore. The composed section sounds better each time out. They follow this up with a gorgeous Hood to wrap up the evening.
