MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 253

Welcome to the 253rd edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday, the penultimate of December. Special thanks to @Dog_Faced_Boy for hosting last week's MJM in my stead – he's the real reason MJM 3.0 never takes a week off, even when yours truly is bouncing around the globe. The winner will receive an MP3 download courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of each of the three mystery jam clips. These three mystery jam clips are connected by a theme, but this week, the theme needn't be part of the answer – it's only there to help you. Each person gets one guess – if no one guesses correctly, I will post a hint on Tuesday, after which each person gets one more guess before I reveal the correct answer on Wednesday around 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. Good luck!

Hint (9:52 AM PT / 12:52 PM ET): If someone were to solve the first two clips first, they would likely be led astray by the obvious commonality between the two – the real theme was hinted at yesterday, but only one of you seemed to notice.

Answer: Congrats to @jerrytimber who wins his first MJM in 5+ years by identifying the 6/16/94 DWD, the 6/16/00 Theme, and the 11/18/98 Wolfman's Brother. @justino was well on his way to his way to his fourth win, having figured out the last two clips and the theme that they were both played in shows featuring performances of "Dog Faced Boy," but he gave up a lot of information right before the hint and @jerrytimber already had the first clip. Regarding the hint, which @HarborSeal correctly noticed I had provided as an Easter Egg in the initial blog post, I linked to the list of all DFB performances instead of to @DFB's user page in my thank you to Phil. The Easter Egg was to supposed to offset the red herring, where two of the clips shared the same date, but @jerrytimber was able to pick up the last couple bits from @justino and cruise to the win. I love the "connected by a Theme" connection that folks found, but I'd be lying if I said I meant to do that! Stay tuned for MJM 254 on Monday, December 26th, and have a great holiday!

metawhy Wow the last one is beautiful and I've heard it multilple times… Mad respect for you guys that can actually dig up these jams in your memory!

uctweezer Hehe pretty sure folks win the MJM from memory less than 5% of the time... it's usually some level of recognition with a bunch of searching on phish.in. You gotta work for it these days!

perpg Wild guess...not even checking.

4/9/94 - Weekapaug Groove
4/2/93 - Weekapaug Groove
9/25/00 - Weekapaug Groove

Common thread: (besides the obvious) they all go into songs from the Gamehenge universe. (Tela, Lizards, Axilla)
, comment by kidrob
kidrob I like all three of those.
, comment by Bob_Loblaw
Bob_Loblaw UCPETE can we just start from scratch again? These are getting ridiculous.
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer @Bob_Loblaw: you know they get harder throughout each month before resetting to easy again the first Monday of the next month, right? The first two this month lasted a total of what, 6 hours? So yeah, ideally one of the last two this month makes it to the hint at least!
, comment by Bob_Loblaw
Bob_Loblaw Hahaha I did not know they got harder. So next week is going to be impossible?

Anyways I'm kidding you're doing a good job! I enjoy digging for these (and inevitably losing :) ).
, comment by runlikecarini
runlikecarini got one, think i need the hint for the other two though

uctweezer @Bob_Loblaw: I'm becoming increasingly more aware that nobody actually reads what I write at the top of each blog post or when I announce things :)

jerrytimber Well, I know the first clip for certain......

justino AHHHH! I give up.

Antelope 6/24/94
Theme 6/16/00
Wolfmans 11/18/98

Theme: All shows have Dog Faced Boy
, comment by jerrytimber
jerrytimber Down With Disease 6/16/94
Theme From the Bottom 6/16/00
Wolfmans Brother 11/18/98
, comment by GottaJibboo
GottaJibboo I assume @jerrytimber is correct. And I know the theme did not count for the win, but do we know what the theme is? The first two are from shows which have a song preceded by a Bowie tease, but not the third.
, comment by GottaJibboo
GottaJibboo perhaps @justino was correct with his Dog Faced Boy theme? Just not sure how this was hinted yesterday per @uctweezer comment
, comment by My_Powerful_Mind
My_Powerful_Mind Looks like @jerrytimber got it.

And DFB was the common theme
, comment by jerrytimber
jerrytimber The theme is the Theme.
, comment by Wombat_en_Fuego
Wombat_en_Fuego This game is too hard for my untrained ears. I am just happy to get the song right. You savants can get the year and date. I feel like such a bad Phisher.
, comment by mcgrupp81
mcgrupp81 I was glad to hear the Wolfman's Brother. It was used in a previous MJM a long time ago. When I heard the jam snippet, I was entranced and immediately gave the song a full listen. I just gave it another listen and I mean, GOOD LORD! Just a beautiful, patient buildup and everyone is just in sync with one another. It's one of those jams where the beauty is so apparent that even a first time listener with no exposure to Phish,or some ill conceived notion of what Phish music is, would be appreciative of the music they were hearing.

I've said it before, but this is really the best thing about MJM. You get exposed to stuff you've haven't heard or may not have heard in a while and you're better for it.
, comment by andrewrose
andrewrose The jams are connected, literally, by a Theme. . You guys should know by now that when the language surrounding the week's initial intro changes, it usually signifies something. The common thread was clearly Dog Faced Boy ('which only one of you', prior to the hint, seemed to get). I had nothing until @justino's post that quickly revealed two of the three jams AND the theme. Odd too that he had the Disease in the right month but couldn't nail down the right version. Why so hasty to post I wonder? I was scanning jams from shows featuring Dog Faced Boy at that point but the late set Disease on 6/16 eluded me, despite checking that show. Fool. The hint actually threw me off for a second, thinking that the first two jams might both be Themes (as opposed to 6/16 shows), and by then it was too late. And now you know how I spent a good chunk of morning yesterday.
, comment by justino
justino Yeah. I definitely screwed this one up. Work was kind of getting in the way of me solving the puzzle -- I didn't think my last period class would understand the real reason why their papers weren't graded!!!
, comment by HarborSeal
HarborSeal @GottaJibboo Note what the mention of @dog_faced_boy links to. That's not Phil Harrison's participation page.
