TREY IS THE CHOOSER

I'm the chooser of what we're going to play. I wonder how it got to be that way. I guess it's just my personality. To me, it's like composing, and I really like composing and I don't get to do it when I'm on the road, so it's my little way of making little suites every night. I usually plan something out before we go on stage, and then we change it when we get on stage. It's very rare that we stick to the whole songlist. Or any of it, for that matter. But I choose it, partially by what we haven't played for a couple of nights before.

Trey Anastasio, 12/10/94 interview with Steve Silberman (though note that setlists have not been pre-written since prior to summer 1997)

Kodiakfloyd More #sand #pushingittothelimits. But I do feel the crowds vibe has a lot to do with set lists. At least I hope so!

phishead you must remember that the more Phish plays the "rare gems" of songs, the less special they become to see live. If they start playing the rare stuff all the time then that eliminates some of the surprise and suspense of going to phish show and wondering about the setlists and the breakout songs. ya know?

Kodiakfloyd Wouldnt want to hear Sand all the time, but seeing them change it up and create something new/explore it in many different ways never gets old. Expect the unexpected and I never know what to expect as in where they will take each song. That's what makes it special. Check out this read someone pointed out to me. This is what it's all about. http://www.relix.com/features/2011/09/01/phish-no-fear-of-flying-an-interview-with-mike-gordon-relix-revisited#.TmfPlpOORrU.twitter Btw, #sand stands for much more than just the song.

johnnyd OK, after fully re-reading that, allow me to rephrase:
That article is a must-read for anyone that, with even a shred of sincerity, considers themself a fan of the phish.

Just read the article. Very interesting, and certainly should be read by all. I love how a "fierce" discussion between two people concerning preferences between such antithetical concepts as innovation and continuity results, after a soundcheck, in an agreement that they were saying the same thing, just from different perspectives. What a testiment to the music and the diversity of thoughts, emotions and beliefs that it causes to ultimately come together.
