MYSTERY JAM MONDAY PART 222

Welcome to the 222nd edition of Phish.Net's Mystery Jam Monday. I've posted three clips this week -- these three clips share something in common. To win, be the first person to identify the song and date of each of the three mystery jam clips, and answer what the three clips share in common. Each person gets one guess per day, with the second “day” starting after I post the hint -- each guess should contain three songs / dates, and a guess at the commonality. No sharing or trading of answers is allowed. A hint will be posted on Tuesday if necessary, with the answer to follow on Wednesday. The winner will receive two MP3 codes good for free downloads of any two shows, courtesy of our friends atLivePhish.com / Nugs.Net. Good luck!

Hint: Though you're certainly hearing Trey, Page, Mike, and Jon playing in these clips, you won't find any of the clips on PhishTracks...

Answer: Congrats to first-time winner @Hamphish, who takes home two codes by identifying the5/17/99 Voodoo Child (Slight Return), the 4/11/04 Chalk Dust Torture, and the 2/1/92 Tone Clone, in addition to figuring out the theme of "Jams where Phish played at another band's gig" (all shows took place, not surprisingly, in Vermont) -- in these cases, Phish with Russ and Tony from TAB, Phish alone after rotating one-by-one with the members TAB, and Phish with the members of Shockra. For those of you who may be asking "Who the heck is Shockra and why did Phish play a few shows with them?", you may be surprised to hear that Mike was taking lessons from Shockra bassist Edwin Hurwitz, a local expert in slap bass, and Mike was keen on adding the technique to his growing repertoire. See you in five days!

andrewrose Finding that second clip is gonna be torture, and the point is I have no idea if that's a pun or not.
, comment by Imasil
Imasil Right? I think I've at least got the song of the second two clips but at the same time one or two other possibilities for them and no progress made so far :/

Gotta say though, love this new format, its a lot of fun and i think simultaneously a lot trickier but also easier than the original format. if you find one clip you should have a starting point for the other two... in theory.

TwiceBitten It's crazy when you think you know one and then you compare it back and forth over and over again and it sounds so similar but it just isn't the same jam. Happening with clip 2 for me right now...
, comment by runlikecarini
runlikecarini could be seeing back to back wins for the blog
, comment by Svenzhenz
Svenzhenz No idea, but I can't wait to find out the answers so I can listen to the complete funkiness of that third clip. Funk master Mike layin' it down!

andrewrose Pfft, who uses Phishtracks anyway?
, comment by TwiceBitten
TwiceBitten Okay now that the we have the hint and I know this isn't a correct guess, listen to how crazy similar clip 2 is to the Light from AC 2012. 6:49 on Phishtracks http://www.phishtracks.com/shows/2012-06-16/light--2

Don't overthink it -- yes, you can hear them all playing in each clip.

Fair enough, though I'd like to think today's hint was pretty straightforward!

straightforward yes but I feel I have exhausted all of my options so I'm just making sure there's no caveat I'm missing...this first jam will haunt me all night...

How carefully worded of you...

I don't actually have any answers and sadly I can't listen right now. But I listened a bunch last night and I'm picking up what you're putting down, you crafty sonofabitch. I can't decide if I love or hate this MJM. I'm pretty sure it's love though.

Nice work! Funny enough, I didn't actually notice they were all played in Vermont, though that makes sense -- where else would all the members of Phish randomly be available to sit in at the same time?
, comment by Hamphish
Hamphish ^my thoughts exacttly...I've had that Shockra show downloaded for a while and it was actually the first thing I thought of when I heard the 3rd clip, but I only listened to it after the hint. What a sick sit in it is though, almost an hour of primal funk jamming...I really liked the creativity on this MJM and wanna express my appreciation for your work on these!

Man, I checked every Holdsworth show, and every pre-94 show that featured a guest guitar player in search of that third clip. Little did I know, I had it backwards.

Cheers to @Hamphish and begrudging cheers to @uctweezer. Solid MJM challenge!

runlikecarini Damn, the second the hint was posted in was thinking April 11 CDT but couldn't find an audio file. Could only find the sand from the same show that was used as an MJM a while ago

That was my approach too when I clearly heard the two guitars in the third track. Well done MJM.

I'd also like to say that I too appreciate this MJM format shift. Good stuff.

All of these are available for download in The Spreadsheet. It'd be insanely hard if these were sources not in heavy circulation! Hmmm, that gives me an idea...

That's not going to happen, though this week @Hamphish did get two download codes because the Blog won last week. The single jam MJMs became too easy for everyone since PhishTracks and Phish.in' came along; plus, there's always a theme for the three jams so it's not like it's three times as difficult. If anything, it's just a shade more difficult, but importantly, it just takes a little longer to figure out. Instead of all your eggs going into finding or not finding a single jam, you have three chances to get one jam, and knowing one of the jam limits the possibilities for the other two as they're tied together by the theme.

Also, since switching to the new format, the Blog has won once (and one user got two of the jams), the users have won once before the hint, and the users have won after the hint three times. That's a much more reasonable breakdown than where the older format had gotten to, where it almost never went to the hint, and many times the MJM was solved so quickly that 90% of the users didn't even get a chance to listen to it before it was over. So while we will certainly be mixing in single jam MJMs (i.e. the classic format), we'll never give away more than one code per week (except when there's carry-over from previous weeks, or during special contests a la MJM 200).
