MOCKINGBIRD MYSTERY JAM MADNESS: ROUND 2

Phish.net and the Mockingbird Foundation present:

The first annual Mockingbird Mystery Jam Madness Tournament!
The second round started today (Thursday, March 23rd), just before Noon PT / 3 PM ET.

RULES:
1) Each participant gets one guess per day, with the next day beginning at midnight ET (certain rounds may provide hints if needed, but regardless of hints posted, each participant gets one guess per calendar day). All answers must be submitted (along with your .net @username) to [email protected]do not post guesses or hints, joking or serious, in the comments section of the Blog – guesses posted to the Blog will not be accepted and will be deleted (irrespective of correctness), the affected round may be voided and restarted, and the offending user(s) may have their accounts suspended and be banned from future (M)MJM competitions. No sharing or trading of answers is permitted. This is for fun and for charity, but we want the tournament to be eminently fair.

2) The first 8 participants to answer correctly advance to the next round – if 8 or fewer participants answer correctly, all will advance. The round ends when the number of participants needed for the next round have advanced – if a round drags on due to poor participation or lack of correct answers despite hints, I will give participants a 24-hour deadline to complete the round. Each successive round will cut down the number of active participants (typically by half), and the puzzles will get progressively more difficult as the tournament continues. After 5 rounds, there will be only one participant remaining: our first annual MMJM Tournament Champion.

3) Our ten Mystery Jam Monday Emeritus (7+ time) winners are permitted to participate, and three are still alive, so don't dawdle!

PRIZE:
The champion will win:
1) Two LivePhish codes, each good for the download of any show from LivePhish.com (courtesy of our friends at LivePhish.com and nugs.net);
2) A $100 donation to the Mockingbird Foundation in their name;
3) The staff of Phish.net will do a blog piece about / interview of the winner on their love of Phish and their MJM prowess.

NOTE:
Participants are encouraged (but not required) to make a donation to the Mockingbird Foundation – in the first round, we received one donation (thank you!) to my knowledge. Every donation counts – we greatly appreciate anything you can spare for children's music programs – $10 is less than the amount of money you'd save by drinking two extra beers in lot pre-show instead of buying them at the beer garden inside. Seeing folks donate to help fund grants for underserved children's music programs is what fuels the Phish.net staff and Mockingbird Foundation Board of Directors; and knowing that running contests and giveaways for this wonderful community can actually lead directly to more donations is exactly what gives us that extra bit of energy needed to put events like this on, free of charge, even when real life occupies all our time. So if you haven't donated to the MBF yet in 2017, please consider it; and if you do, we'll put a MBF badge in your achievements alongside that badge you got for winning the MJM.

ROUND 2 CLIPS:
The first 8 people to email the correctly identified songs and dates of these ten clips will advance to the second round. The theme of this round is "Moments Like These" – these clips all come from fleeting moments in Phish shows that stick out in my mind as unique. I suspect many of you will recognize many of them on first listen, but there is at least one that nobody can be reasonably expected to know off the bat, so ideally we won't have any insta-solves. The first four seeds (#1-#4) received the clip around Noon PT / 3 PM ET; the next four seeds (#5-#8) received the clip around 1 PM PT / 4 PM ET, etc. until all the seeded participants got the link to the clip. When this post goes live, the wildcard players will get access too. Good luck everyone, and those not in Round 2, please don't spoil any answers or I'll have to close the comments!

ROUND 2 SEEDING:

Tweezer Region YEM Region Piper Region Light Region BDTNL Region
seed username seed username seed username seed username seed username
#1 @garcia17 #5 @ckess22 #9 @greenicle13 #13 @harborseal wildcard @raisinsnacks

ROUND 2 UPDATE:
For those confused by the track boundaries on this wacky megaclip, here are the clip start and end times (and yes, the one second dropout in clip #1 was on purpose):

#1 0:00-0:30
#2: 0:30-1:00
#3: 1:00-1:15
#4 1:15-1:45
#5 1:45-2:03
#6: 2:03-2:36
#7: 2:36-2:40
#8: 2:40-2:46
#9: 2:46-3:08
#10: 3:08-3:12

ROUND 2 HINT:
Six of the clips were played in the US.
Five of the clips were played in '97 - '00.
Four of the clips were played at shows I attended.
Three of the clips were played in March.
Two of the clips were played at venues with the same nickname* – but are in two different cities in the same state.
One of the clips isn't in Phish.in', because it happened before the band started playing the set.

*By "nickname," I'm referring not to a venue's official name as listed on phish.net, but the name by which most every fan refers to it. Vegas '14 was played at "MGM," New Year's eve is played at "MSG," the reunion shows were at "Hampton," too bad the band isn't playing "Shoreline" or "Bill Graham" this year, etc. Two of these clips have nearly the exact same venue name, but one of them has some extra words in its official venue name.

FINAL UPDATE:

As of 4:00 PM ET on March 26th, I have received SEVEN correct submissions – and an eighth user has submitted a correct scoresheet that I can't accept until midnight ET because he already guessed once for Sunday. Many users are ridiculously close – be sure to cross-check your answers with the hint (and yes, my shows seen are up-to-date). If a user who hasn't yet guessed today submits a correct scoresheet before midnight ET, that user will fill the last slot. If any users who have guessed today submit a correct scoresheet before midnight ET, we'll have a tie for the last slot, and more than eight will advance. Either way, Round 2 ends today!

ANSWER:

Congrats to the users below for being the first and only eight to correctly identify all ten clips:

seed username seed username seed username seed username
#1 @dbertsch #3 @bl002e #5 @12_29_97_4eva #7 @ghostboogie
#2 @cerqs #4 @ChalkDustTeacher #6 @runlikecarini #8 @PhreePhish

THE CLIPS:

7/6/98 Maze, 3/19/93 Love You, 8/6/10 Cities, 7/9/97 YEM, 12/7/97 Tube, 3/6/09 YEM, 6/14/00 Fee, 2/14/03 AC/DC Bag, 4/17/04 Meatstick, 3/1/97 Cities

If you liked this blog post, one way you could "like" it is to make a donation to The Mockingbird Foundation, the sponsor of Phish.net. Support music education for children, and you just might change the world.

TwiceBitten I'm somewhat confused. If we did not participate in round one, are we allowed to submit guesses for round two? Just realized this was happening...

uctweezer The hint will put you on the right track. Coming tomorrow.

@TwiceBitten – yeah, only those who made it through the first round are eligible to win. If you want to PM or email me I'll tell you what you got right, but I wouldn't start on the vacuum solo hunt!
, comment by PhreePhish
PhreePhish If this were a regular MJM, the blog would've won it with the vacuum jam.

Kudos!
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer I'm guessing that with the hint, this is gonna be a wrap by the time I wake up...
, comment by PhreePhish
PhreePhish I got it.

Just got go make sure #9 was correct.
If it isn't, notify me somehow and I'll email "the other one" (not a GD reference ) after midnight.

Man that was crazy!!!
, comment by cerqs
cerqs That indeed was crazy!! I had serious trouble with #9....like i spent the entire day trouble. Lol.
, comment by bl002e
bl002e Bam, got 'em.

#2 and #7 gave me the most trouble. #9 was one of the first that I *did* get, somehow.

Pete, you really are an evil bastard. As a former host, I couldn't possibly be prouder.
, comment by justino
justino I want to smash #2 and #7 in the dickhole!

, comment by ghostboogie
ghostboogie i think* i'm in... just going on the record right now to say that the random vacuum solo was cruel & unusual punishment...
, comment by justino
justino So I had a dream that I was solving an MJM last night. This after staying up way too late and drinking way too much trying to solve this damn puzzle. At least there were no vacuum jams in my dream.
, comment by runlikecarini
runlikecarini submitted my answers at like 2:30 am last night. hope i made it!
, comment by jimsleftear
jimsleftear As an avid fan with nothing other than phish.in for shows, I'm interested to see what I missed and where you guys found it. Well done friends.
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer The vacuum jam was definitely cruel, but the hint was not! Or so I like to think. Round 3 will be more straightforward, but Round 2 was definitely the round where we found out who wanted it badly – and many folks did.

Will update blog post shortly (I'm traveling and don't have laptop handy), but based on a count on my phone, we have 7 locked and loaded for Round 2, one correct answer sheet in that constitutes a second guess for the day that I can't accept until 9 PM PT, and a number of folks with 7-9 correct answers, some of whom have already submitted a guess today, some of whom haven't.

This is going to be crazy!
, comment by WayIFeel
WayIFeel Well folks I concede. I searched high and low and just couldn't figure out #7 and #9. Good luck to the folks waiting until midnight to punch your ticket.
Great job once again Pete.

Emeritus down! Number 9 is definitely hard but an as MJMer of your stature, you might be kicking yourself when you see number 7. Obviously the clip is tough but it's a very famous show. you're still an MJM GOAT though!!

uctweezer Laptop battery died before I could elaborate a bit on the solution (and the blog post was already a few chapters of a novel), and I forgot my power cord at home, but I'll share what I thought were some paths to solution (besides recognition, which was the case for at least one person for each clip except for the vacuum solo):

1) http://bfy.tw/As2P ('97-'00 #1)
2) (played at "The Greek Theater" in CA, in March #1, in US #1)
3) crowd yells "ancient Greeks!", crowd roars (also played at "The Greek Theater" in CA, I was in attendance #1, in US #2)
4) http://bfy.tw/As2W ('97-'00 #2)
5) http://bfy.tw/As2a ('97-'00 #3, harder to hear on AUD, in US #3)
6) http://bfy.tw/As2p (I was in attendance #2, in March #2, in US #4)
7) http://bfy.tw/As2q ('97-'00 #4)
8) http://bfy.tw/As2v (I was in attendance #3, in US #5)
9) http://bfy.tw/As39 (I was in attendance #4, pre-set chant not captured by phish.in' which starts at music, in US #6)
10) http://bfy.tw/As3F ('97-'00 #5, March #3)
, comment by cerqs
cerqs On my earlier post i said I had trouble with #9 I meant to say #7 Fee. My wife's favorite phish song that i make fun of her on all the time. Lol

You know how I figured out if was Fee? I was reading a ucpete review from 2-14-03 and in his review he was all about Fee. Who writes reviews about Fee? Lol. So i started from there and used his clues and realized i needed a 1997-2000 show out of the U.S and my nightmare frustration was finally solved.
, comment by dbertsch
dbertsch The vacuum solo was definitely the most time-consuming, but Fee was the last one I got too. It took listening to the clip for probably the 50th time before I noticed that the woodblock was teasing something vaguely familiar. Luckily for me, googling "phish woodblock tease" led straight to the Fukuoka Fee.

Thanks for another great puzzle, Pete! Looking forward to round 3!
, comment by jimsleftear
jimsleftear Because I couldn't actually "hear" Trey and Fish talking on #5 on phish.in I thought I had to be wrong and that #5 must be the pre-set thing I was missing.
And I was positive the Meatstick chant was from 9/22/00, where the crowd clearly is chanting it, so I never bothered to second guess it.

Those are 9 hours I'm not getting back...

I googled "stage banter and phish" forum came up and someone posted the discussion before the tube jam 12/7/1997. That's how I found that clip.
, comment by PhreePhish
PhreePhish -Lucky i knew the Maze, Fee and Bag right away.
-I had to end up doing forum searches for the 3/1/97 Cities and 3/6/09 YEM. Just put in botched or changed lyrics. First time i had to resort to that!
-7/9/97 YEM wasn't too hard to find. Sparse crowd in that back meant European show.
-12/7/97 i could only verify with my downloaded sbd recording, so that was crazy.
-Vacuum solo, like everyone else, couldn't find until the hint and then it was obvious.

Of course the Meatstick chant got me. I put in 9/22/00 right before midnight and 10/12/10 right after to 'hedge my bets.' After I found out i was wrong I researched a bit and found 4/17/04 and submitted it. Almost lost out because i had to wait till the next day.

Fun times!!
, comment by jimsleftear
jimsleftear I'd like to know how many people found the vacuum bit pre-hint.
I listed to so many I Didn't Know's before I realized it had to be a Love You...then it was only a matter of time.
So I got that pre-hint yet failed on the Meatstick pre-set. Idiot.

Me too! I played #7 for my wife this morning. Without missing a beat she said, "Oh. Fee. That's my jam."
, comment by ChalkDustTeacher
ChalkDustTeacher I got 6 more or less right away: Prague Maze, Both Cities, 12/7/97 Tube, Hampton YEM, Fukuoka Fee (googling necessary on the last two).

The 'Happy Valentine' had me completely bamboozled. I kept hearing 'Happy Birthday' - if I had heard it correctly it would have been much easier.

Never would have got the vacuum solo without the hint.

Couldn't tell that people were chanting the Meatstick. It just sounded like a horrible cannibalistic chant for people who want blood. I put this one together just from looking through ucpete's shows. When I saw the show notes for 4/17/04 I realized what the crowd was chanting.

Pretty sure I listened to every Europe and Japan YEM intro. Must have got distracted while listening to 7/9/97 the first time through. I have been listening to this whole show today (just wrapping up now) and it has some great music and some pretty funny banter centred around Pierre the Haagen-Dazs worker ("Where's Pierre? C'mon, Pierre, where are you? Don't anybody else put your hands up except Pierre. YES!" at the beginning of DWD made me LOL). Thanks for turning me on to this show @uctweezer. Certainly a magical moment when you can clearly hear someone whisper "shh" in the YEM opening.
, comment by TwiceBitten
TwiceBitten A note on the Fee (clip 7).. you can hear Trey sing the word "shoes" on the fade in. Always important to see if there any tip offs in the very beginning or end of the clip. I did not recognize the Charlie Chan tease. This was fun. I played privately and got 7/10. Didn't think to search for silent jam in YEM, didn't bother with the vacuum solo and couldn't make out Meatstick in the crowd chant, though it seems insanely obvious to me now.
, comment by runlikecarini
runlikecarini The only ones I knew right off the bat without any sort of google searching was that Fee and 7/9/97 YEM. That sit-in with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones is incredible so as soon as I heard the one guy clapping I knew where to go. I found both Cities, Bag, Hampton Yem, and Maze shortly after with googling. Needed the hints to get the crowd and vacuum. Found meastick first by going through Pete's shows. I knew the vacuum was 92-94 just by sound so I focused on Pete's shows and crowd noise. After listening to it 1 million times I FINALLY remember that fishman clip as the Dayton Tube. Can't believe it took me that long. So then I knew it was March at the other Greek Theater based on my last two hints. Found the vacuum in minutes.

That was fun! (kinda lol, still not happy about that vacuum)
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer @dbertsch was the only one to solve the puzzle pre-hint – incredible work and a well-deserved top seed heading into the next round.

But everyone was super impressive this round. Resourceful as hell, and I'm glad that folks discovered some good music in the interim. That 7/9/97 show is hilarious and awesome.

I promise: no more vacuum solos. Next round will be a challenge but will be straightforward MJMing.
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer Will email folks tomorrow when I'm back at the grind, but to the remaining 8 contestants: is there a preferred time / window for starting round 3? First thing in the morning? Afternoon? After work? I'm thinking Thursday is the day but I'm open to pushing a day in either direction too (i.e. starting sometime between Wed and Fri).

Now that the number of folks is more manageable, there may be a time that works for everyone (including me!) – if that's true, we should definitely find it and use it so it's as fair as possible.
