overall, nice review, but "paradigm-shifting" hood from mansfield? listen, I thought that was a great hood too, but it's not paradigm shifting... all they did was jam in G instead of hood's native key of D - it's a simple modal modulation, nothing earth shattering, but a very effective piece of harmonic trickery! They did the same thing in the Chicago hood this weekend.
Hardly! Keys and modulations aside, it was the changes in feel and little "mini-structures" that made this one so "out-of-the-box". It was like they took Hood and within 13 of those 18 minutes explored nearly every possible facet of it, without any of the changes being abrupt. The Chicago "Hood" had a similar key modulation but did more of a slow build to climax that was satisfying, but not nearly as "exploratory". The "Great Woods Hood" is an example of when all 4 "cylinders" are firing in a very broad direction, and the words "cubist" and "abstract" come to mind when going back to it. The only misfire was when Trey sorta forced the outro chords and came in kinda sharp with them.
