Mansfield n2o Dealer Spends Two Nights In Wormtown

The Mansfield Wicked Local reports the saga of Barton Gray, a 31 year old alleged nitrous oxide dealer from Connecticut who, after the Phish show, spent two days in the storm drains eluding police.  Unbelievable story.  Nitrous dealers...I'm sure it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.  Keep it classy, phans!

wrinkledraisin it's easy folks. stop buying nitrous and the tanks disappear. there's so many ways to enjoy the shows and the environs. 'hippie crack' is sullying the community. want whippets, suck whip cream in your dorm/apt/house. that's all.

Mr_Miner Unfortunately we have been in a drought for most of the Summer. The 23rd would have been a good time for a soaking rain.

zappafrank1970 i cant stop laughing. this is Daily show newsworthy. im glad to see the n2o is in decline at phish shows. compared to the 90's that is. it was pout of hand about 97. i guess he did time to a faulty plan. oh wait that to cliche.

Lemuria Sentences aren't always about the offender, as in punishment or rehabilitation. Sometimes, it's about other potential offenders (as in deterrence) or the rest of society (isolation). Isn't there a broad consensus that we'd like nitrous distribution deterred and kept away, regardless of whether one of the dumbasses apprehended happened to get scraped and bruised on his way to jail? Would local authorities reconsider pressing charges if there was a national outcry from fans about them letting him get off "easy"?

Not based on what I saw recently at [Hartford, Jones Beach, Fenway, MSG, *Carnegie Hall* etc]. There seems to be a broad consensus against the distribution of nitrous by a self-selected group of fans on the Intergoogles, but when the tanks emerge at a show there is an insta-line every time, representing a wholly different consensus. People stop buying, these guys pack up their tanks and go elsewhere. Tell your friends.

Regardless, I'd like to see this approached for what it is: organized crime. But in most of the instances (definitely in New York, definitely in Boston, definitely in Philly) the cops are in on the action, so its a huge uphill climb. The people who peddle this stuff are dangerous and very often violent; they should relentlessly tracked down, arrested, and prosecuted. No place for that shit at a Phish show or anywhere else.

AugustWest2001 i wish there was no mention of phish in this article. it hurts the phish name and the crowd image. i mean really. phish crowd should be able to have a good time and not have to be connected to nitrous and this subterranean chud-douche.

Agree with all you said...interesting take on the urban cops' being paid off...I'd add that these guys are infinitely worse at multi-day camping festivals than in parking lots or streets around urban venues. At least you can keep walking...but try telling the aholes at the next tent to cool it with all night screaming "one for five five for twenty" and the tanks and you will get a very unfriendly response atypical of cheerful jamband fans...or you will witness actual beatdowns when people try to steal drugs or money from each other or defend their "turf". Lots of good festivals (e.g., Berkfest) were basically done in by the "nitrous/hippie mafia" they infiltrated the legit vendors and paid for stalls; it's very hard to police the hilly, wooded areas of a ski resort compared to open fields at many other festivals, etc.

forbinn nitrous ruins the vibe. as soon as you pull your first balloon, it's over. find more, do more, "did you hear that? sounded like a tank, I gotta go" next thing you know, you're three lots over, lost, confused, and broke. your buddies have grown impatient and a bit crusty with you. not a good way to start the show. it makes for a lame time, be it yourself or your friends. no one wins except the dealers. save your money and use it for a more worthy cause.
, comment by Lemuria
Lemuria Could a map or site to dump geo-tagged photos be used by law enforcement to find tanks? Yes, they move quickly - but if 5-10 photos pop up a red flag, it becomes harder for an entire force to ignore them. Yes, they're violent - and i'd hesitate before picking up a phone and being overhead dialing 911; but they can't very well beatdown everyone who snaps a photo, esp if there are lots at once.

Maybe the answer is some form of counter-force. Superhero anti-mafia mutant ninja phans. Or just a few bold bad asses with super-soakers filled with butyric acid.

I think I speak for a lot of phans when I say that I don't want the tanks to disappear.
I'm sure you're correct (hell, the only reason they are there is because people want them to be - supply and demand, right?). But there's a difference between buying from the phans next to you or bringing your own, and buying from the mafia. Nitrous isn't my cup of tea at all but I'm ok with other people using it. Just please, let it be an extension of our community - phriendly, chill, and responsible; not profit-driven, organized, and most of all, violent.

robdogg42000 @robdogg42000 said: Lets try this a third time..... I agree, no beef with N20 itself, just with the douche bags selling it. I was at the two night Cinci run last year and as we left the venue and headed down the stairs towards the street, there were dealers with a tank standing there on the stairs shouting "medical grade!" They didn't come out of the show with a tank. They showed up after just to make money. They're not fans, they're opportunists. What really pissed me off about that night though was that fact that because of their presense cops squashed shakedown hella early.

drunkenjazz If you think nitrous is a major problem for the scene, you've got to be crazy. HEROIN is everywhere and HEROIN destroys lives. Between Indio, Detroit, Deer Creek and Alpine I overheard at least a hundred conversations regarding H or opiates, bags, smack, junk, dope etc...

Nitrous is worth a giggle from time to time, Heroin is a lifestyle that is a dead end road.

Sure there are people out there that charge $10 a balloon and those people suck. On the other hand there are people out there that sell HEROIN and those people really fucking suck. Get over it, if you don't like balloons you can avoid them. Next time you see someone selling Heroin tell them they are the root of all evil and need to do the world a favor and get help. There is no room in the world for Heroin, it's a death trap.
