INTRODUCING THE NEW PHISH.NET TEASE CHART

Through my years of seeing and listening to Phish, I've always enjoyed hearing songs teased in the middle of what the band was playing. The 2nd Edition of The Phish Companion took this information and put it to print, resulting in a four page Teases Chart. As I compiled my collection of Phish shows, I would actively seek out certain versions of songs to hear specific teases - something that enriched my experience of exploring the band's vast musical history. Upon joining the Phish.Net crew in 2009 and becoming involved in the setlist team, I would constantly add new teases to the database, partially from my own listening finds and often from Phish.Net user submissions.

Sitting in a diner before the Manchester, NH show in 2010, it dawned on me that a new tease chart was needed - an updated version from the Phish Companion brought into digital format. With the help of a Google spreadsheet, I went through the setlist file and built a new chart, making a few changes along the way. The digital chart now had what songs the teases appeared in (the previous chart only had dates), and the chart now noted teases of cover songs that had song histories, as well as Phish songs teased within other songs. Songs that always appeared in other songs (like Rhapsody in Blue being a part of Bathtub Gin) were not included in the chart. Adam Scheinberg linked the Google document into Phish.net and the chart became a part of the site.

Today marks a new phase in the tease chart. In early 2012, all of the data was entered into the back end of Phish.net with a goal of providing a new interactive experience for fans checking out the site. The old Google spreadsheet was admittedly not pleasant on the eyes where you were staring at a bunch of boxes with information. The tease chart is now completely tied into Phish.net with links for each tease to its respective show.

Also getting an upgrade are the Every Time Played charts. If you select a song that has actually been played (for example Gotta Jibboo), you can scroll down to the bottom of that page to now see every time that song was teased as well. Although only Phish versions of teases are listed now, there are plans in the near future to include teases from side projects as well. The tease chart is a constantly evolving project, with additions being made on an almost daily basis. As you listen to Phish (or the side projects), if you find any additions, feel free to submit them via Submit a Correction on that show's setlist or tweet them to me on Twitter at @bizarchive. The success of the chart and the site is tied into all of the great finds that you've been presenting in the last three years.

You can check out the new comprehensive Phish.net tease chart now.

parrott56 Thanks so much for all your hard work, guys. One point of curiosity: is there still an ongoing process of reviewing user-submitted teases that have been sent in via the setlist correction form? I know I've dropped a bunch that way -- I've heard back on some of them, but not on others, so I just wanted to make sure those were reaching the appropriate parties.

I know there must be a staggering backlog of stuff like that -- thanks again for sorting through all of it for us.

Your tease submissions have been received. There are some we haven't gotten to yet. Thanks for all of you corrections/finds!

King_Williamson Sometimes when I listen to my old tapes, which some are of less than stellar quality, I will find myself thinking, "did I just hear what I thought I heard?" Well, the tease chart is going to do wonders. Now I can stop with the internal debates, although I do quite enjoy them sometimes. Ha! Thanks Bizzaro! Keep up the nice work.

Slothberries This is great. thank you

im wondering why nobody ever mentions the PYITE tease in the 12/30/97 ac/dc bag. its been clear as day to me since the night of the show

roybelly The thing about the tease chart that most stands out to me is wide variety of musical influences on the band. A rare few people will find all of that on their own...but for most people it directly ties back to music education. Without music teachers and professors over the years, I would never have known about Thelonious Monk....John Coltrane.....Weather Report.....Bach....Tchaikovsky....Cole Porter...Coltrane......and many others. It is no insult to say that Phish are standing on the shoulders of giants.....without music education, all of the fantastic music Phish has dished out over the years wouldn't be possible.

::Still waiting for my Birdland tease someday....when the boys are all on stage together, anything is possible

studboyx thank you so much for this. i've been working on a compilation of all known covers and cover teases since may '10 which is very close to completion and have been using your tease chart regularly throughout my progress since discovering it.

there are two elements about the chart that i feel would be greatly beneficial if they could be added:

1) if, when the chart is edited (i.e., there is a tease added or deleted from the chart) there was some sort of log of such. as i've been using this (wonderful) document since i discovered it, it has become extremely tiresome to have to periodically go back and cross-reference my own tease spreadsheet with yours to see if items have been added to / deleted from the list.

2) and i know this would be a ridiculous amount of work, but....as ADAWGWYO above posted, it would be really cool to have some sort of reference as to *where* in the song the tease is located. as i've literally spent thousands of hours on this compilation i've been working on, there remain some teases i've just not been able to find after listening to the songs over and over (e.g., the alleged 'soul sacrifice' [santana] tease during the 7/3/95 bowie). fwiw, i personally have a great deal of 'rough data' for this (mainly included in filenames/metadata of songs on my computer) and would be willing to help contribute to such a project, but not until i see this other behemoth's completion (at least version 1.0)

that said, if anyone out there would be willing to help me figure out where any of the following teases are (approx start/finish time in track) and pm me, i'd be really grateful:

TEASE SONG TITLE - DATE - SONG CONTAINING TEASE
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dark Star Jam 11/23/85 Whipping Post JAM
Dark Star TEASE 7/4/99 Slave
Days Between TEASE 7/8/99 BOAF
I Know You Rider TEASE 6/24/00 Tweezer
Keep It Greasy TEASE 12/29/95 Bass Duet
Kool Thing JAM 8/14/93 YEM
La Marseillaise TEASE 5/5/93 YEM
Let It Grow TEASE 6/21/09 Crosseyed & Painless
Little Faces TEASE 8/14/10 DWD
Music Never Stopped TEASE 4/15/86 Possum
Soul Sacrifice TEASE 7/3/95 Bowie1
